The Black Phone

I’d dodged The Black Phone for years, figuring kid-in-peril horror wasn’t my vibe- too bleak, too gimmicky. Wrong! Finally watched and it hooked me with creeping dread and heart, earning a solid 7.5/10.

Ethan Hawke’s Grabber is a masked masterpiece: whimsical one second, savage the next, his eyes and voice chilling through those devilish horns. Mason Thames nails Finney’s terror-to-triumph arc, while Madeleine McGraw’s Gwen spits fire and faith, stealing every scene with her psychic sass.

Scott Derrickson’s direction nails ’78 grit – abusive homes, bully beatdowns, ghostly calls – blending jumps with raw sibling bonds and abuse cycles. The black phone’s victim whispers build clever escapes, not cheap scares. Sure, some predictability, but the tension’s palpable, ghosts poignant.

Surprise gem that left me hyped for the sequel’s supernatural revenge – Grabber’s back from the grave? Sign me up!
