I finally caught “The Running Man” after years of meaning to watch it… partly because the Glen Powell remake drops next week and I’ve got tickets. This is pure ’80s Arnold at his most entertainingly excessive, and I loved it more than expected.
Fair warning: you need to embrace the era. The synth-heavy score, neon color palette, and big hair aren’t bugs – they’re features. Once you accept you’re watching 1987 in all its gaudy glory, “The Running Man” becomes incredibly fun. The action is cartoonish, the plot is thin, but the energy never flags.
Richard Dawson absolutely owns this movie as the sadistic game show host. He’s terrifyingly believable because he was an actual game show host, bringing authentic showbiz sleaze to the role. And yes, Arnold’s famous “It’s showtime!” meme originates here… worth watching for that moment alone.
What genuinely impressed me: they predicted deepfakes almost 40 years ago. The film shows digitally manipulated footage used to control public perception and frame innocent people – eerily prescient given our current fake news reality.
Now I’m both excited and nervous about the remake. Can modern CGI and AI tech capture this film’s campy energy while updating the satire? We’ll see next week.
7.5/10 – Ridiculous ’80s fun that’s smarter than it looks.
