A Clever Plot That Needed a Sharper Knife

Maharathi is an underrated Hindi mystery that works mainly because of its terrific ensemble.

Paresh Rawal is magnetic as Subhash – sly, sharp, and always hinting at a deeper game. Boman Irani adds crisp wit as the insurance investigator, while Neha Dhupia brings a cool, noir-like presence that complements the film’s tone. Even with limited screen time, Naseeruddin Shah lends the story emotional weight right at the start.

The plot, adapted from a stage play, has a compelling “web of greed” feel, where everyone is trying to outsmart everyone else. It’s engaging, clever in parts, and refreshingly understated for a Hindi thriller of its time.

Where the film stumbles is in the execution. Some scenes drag when they should snap forward, and tighter editing could have amplified the tension significantly.

Still, it’s a smart, interesting watch anchored by strong performances. A solid 7/10.
