Netflix’s “The Twits” commits the cardinal sin of Dahl adaptations: it scrubs away everything that made the source material wickedly delightful. What should be gleefully disgusting becomes preachy and dull, trading beard-dwelling food scraps for empathy lectures nobody asked for.
Phil Johnston’s direction neuters the Twits into generic villains while shoving two orphans and magical creatures into a bloated plot about amusement park tyranny. The original book’s cruel pranks – its entire raison d’être – are nearly absent. Instead: hot dog meat floods, imprisonment metaphors, and relentless moralizing about kindness.
Margo Martindale and Johnny Vegas gamely voice characters stripped of authentic nastiness. David Byrne’s songs feel contractually obligated rather than inspired. The animation is serviceable but forgettable.
Roald Dahl understood children love genuine darkness with wit. This sanitized slog insults both his legacy and young viewers’ intelligence.
Don’t waste your and your kids’ precious time together – watch a Wonka or Matilday rerun instead!
