Piaf’s Life in Pink: A Biopic That Dazzles and Drags
IMDb rating: 7/10
La Vie en Rose is a film that soars on the strength of Marion Cotillard’s Oscar-winning performance. She doesn’t just play Édith Piaf – she becomes her, channeling the singer’s fiery spirit and heartbreaking vulnerability.
The non-linear storytelling keeps things fresh, and the period visuals are stunning, immersing you in Piaf’s world. But the film isn’t perfect: the pacing drags at times, and the constant jumps between eras sometimes feel jarring rather than illuminating. The music, while beautifully rendered and fully suiting the movie, didn’t hook me… perhaps a matter of personal taste. And they saved the best song for the end!
Still, the emotional punch is undeniable. By the end, I was genuinely moved, not just by Piaf’s tragic story, but by Cotillard’s ability to make her pain feel so real. It’s a flawed but powerful biopic, elevated by a performance for the ages.
7.5/10: worth watching for Cotillard alone, even if the runtime feels a bit indulgent.
