There Will Be Blood

A Flawed Masterpiece with a Western Blind Spot

IMDb rating: 7/10

I’ll admit it: There Will Be Blood left me cold.

Daniel Day-Lewis is undeniably phenomenal… his performance as Daniel Plainview is a tour de force, and the film’s technical craft (cinematography, score, direction) is top-tier. But here’s the catch: this isn’t the flawless classic it’s often made out to be.

The pacing’s a slog at times, and that whole “capitalism vs. Religion” showdown? Felt a little too unnecessarily binary and distinctly Western. Like, can’t we just admit that life (and people) are messier than that? Ignoring the reality that in many cultures (especially Eastern and Asian traditions) – capitalism, religion, and sustainability can coexist harmoniously.

The film’s got style for days, but the substance didn’t grab me the way it did for others. The ending is bold, but it also feels hollow… more concerned with shock value than depth.

Still, 7/10 – because even if it’s not the citizen-kane-of-our-time some claim, it’s got moments of pure brilliance. Just don’t hype it up too much before watching.
