When Good Intentions Meet Cringe Execution

Right then, I finally ticked Ra. One off the list and, blimey, it’s every bit the let-down I feared.

SRK throws everything at the screen – money, enthusiasm, two roles – but it still lands like a hyperactive kids’ birthday party that forgot the cake. The first half is painfully cheesy with cringe Tamil stereotypes and toilet humour; the second half just becomes a loud video-game cut-scene with a villain who barely speaks.

“Chammak Challo” and Kareena’s sass are genuine bright spots, and for 2011 the effects were ambitious, yet next to Shankar’s Robot and 2.0 it feels like plastic toys fighting in a car park. I admire the balls it took to try an Indian superhero flick, but the script is thinner than a London drizzle.

5.5/10: watch it once for curiosity and the bangers on the soundtrack, then quietly move on.
