I watched Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey with the kids after the triumph of the first film, half-expecting a cheap cash-in. Blimey, was I wrong – this is the rare sequel that says “hold my air guitar” and goes properly mental in the best way.
Evil robot duplicates, a trip through hell that’s equal parts scary and side-splitting, and William Sadler’s magnificently stroppy Grim Reaper who ends up as their reluctant bandmate? Absolute genius.
Yes, it’s darker and dafter than the sunny original, but the heart is still pure California sunshine. Some of the afterlife gags have been nicked by half of Hollywood since, yet nothing matches this film’s bonkers charm.
Keanu and Alex remain national treasures, the practical effects slap, and you’ll never hear “Every rose has its thorn” the same way again. Not quite the masterpiece of part one, but a triumphant 7.5/10. Station!
