Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Wow! I loved this 22 years ago, and my kids loved it when I rewatched with them now. The Curse of the Black Pearl is an absolute triumph – Disney’s audacious alchemy transforming a beloved Disneyland attraction into a rollicking, big-screen spectacle.

Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow is nothing short of a revelation: a permanently inebriated, kohl-eyed rogue who pirouettes through chaos with genius comic timing and roguish charm. He owns every frame.

Knightley and Bloom, fresh-faced and frightfully good, bring spark and swordplay in equal measure, their chemistry crackling delightfully.

Gore Verbinski steers the ship with breathless confidence, blending swashbuckling adventure, supernatural intrigue, and laugh-out-loud wit into a near-perfect summer brew. The script fizzes, the set-pieces dazzle, and that rousing score still makes one want to hoist the mainsail.

A joyous, unapologetic crowd-pleaser. 8.5/10.
