Sketch

Sketch boasts impressive production values and imaginative creature designs that showcase genuine visual creativity on a modest budget. Unfortunately, these technical achievements can’t salvage a fatally sluggish narrative that mistakes emotional processing for storytelling.

Seth Worley spends nearly half this 93-minute film establishing grief, bullying, and family dynamics before delivering any promised monster chaos. By the time Amber’s drawings finally rampage through town, both my daughter and I had lost investment… we simply didn’t care about the monsters or the people anymore. The pacing drags relentlessly through repetitive emotional beats that feel more like therapy sessions than entertainment.

Bianca Belle delivers a strong performance as Amber, and the practical creature effects deserve credit. However, heavy-handed messaging about processing trauma overwhelms what should be a fun family adventure. Despite critics’ praise, this isn’t the engaging experience marketing promised.

Much better family options exist that respect both children’s intelligence and their need for actual entertainment.
