Christy suffers from fatal identity confusion – half inspirational boxing movie, half domestic abuse trauma drama, never committing fully to either.
Michod’s direction delivers formulaic sports biopic beats before abruptly shifting into repetitive abuse patterns and shocking violence. Too much boxing for an abuse story, too little boxing specificity for sports fans. The result? Two incompatible films awkwardly stitched together.
Sydney Sweeney is extraordinary. She gained 30 pounds of muscle, performed real punches without doubles, and disappears into Christy’s contradictions… ferocious champion versus closeted, vulnerable woman. Ben Foster matches her intensity as the monstrous Jim Martin. They deserve superior material. The 130 min runtime drags through middle-act repetition.
Michod attempts too much without achieving greatness in either genre. Sweeney gives her absolute all physically and emotionally, delivering career-best work. Watchable entirely for her commitment; frustrating that the director couldn’t match it.
