Revisiting Top Gun after decades reminded me why it still sits firmly in the modern action canon. Even nearly 40 years later, the film retains an energy and confidence that many contemporary blockbusters struggle to match.
The aerial sequences remain thrilling, sharply shot and edited, and the emotional beats are far more resonant than nostalgia alone would suggest.
Tom Cruise commands the film with early-career charisma, but the wider cast – particularly Anthony Edwards and Val Kilmer – round out a story that blends style, camaraderie, rivalry and loss with surprising sincerity. It still moves quickly, hits hard, and carries that unmistakable Tony Scott flair.
While some 80s aesthetics show their age, the core of the film has not: it’s engaging, sincere, and endlessly rewatchable. As a setup for Top Gun: Maverick, it works perfectly, reminding you of the emotional spine beneath all the spectacle.
Still a rock-solid 8/10 for me.
