Raat Akeli Hai (2020)

Raat Akeli Hai is a solid neo-noir thriller elevated almost entirely by Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s phenomenal performance. He carries this 2.5-hour mystery single-handedly, inhabiting the small-town cop with such authenticity that you forget you’re watching acting. His Jatil Yadav is awkward, determined, and utterly compelling – the film’s beating heart.

Unfortunately, the film squanders some potential with a bloated middle section that desperately needed 30 min trimmed. The investigation stalls with repetitive scenes, and the ending over-explains everything when brevity would’ve been more powerful. Radhika Apte feels miscast in a crucial role, delivering limited expressions where enigmatic complexity was required.

The atmospheric cinematography and strong ensemble (Shweta Tripathi, Tigmanshu Dhulia) support Nawazuddin’s heavy lifting. It’s a good effort tackling dark themes maturely, but tighter editing would’ve made this great.

6/10: worth watching for Nawazuddin alone. Hopeful for the sequel.
