The Grinch (2018)

We just wrapped up our third family viewing of this 2018 adaptation, and it still hasn’t lost its luster. It is a rare find: a film that triggers genuine belly laughs from my daughter while maintaining a grounded emotional weight that resonates with the adults.

Benedict Cumberbatch delivers a sophisticated vocal performance, trading the usual gravelly villainy for a dry, relatable cynicism that makes his eventual transformation feel earned. The visual craft from Illumination is top-tier; the neon glow of Whoville set against the velvety mountain shadows is a total visual feast.

It steers clear of being overly saccharine, opting instead for a witty, rhythmic pace that respects the original Seuss wit. Even on a third rewatch, this remains a sharp, vibrant highlight of our yearly rotation.

A definitive 8/10.
