Dead of Winter is worth watching largely because of Emma Thompson, who completely owns the film. Seeing her in such a stripped-back, physical role is refreshing, especially after lighter or more familiar recent work. She brings weight and credibility to a character who spends much of the runtime alone, battling both the environment and her own instincts.
The film looks excellent. The winter visuals are striking and often do more work than the dialogue. The story itself is solid but feels underdeveloped. Some character choices don’t fully add up, and a few moments stretch logic when the film needs clarity instead. That said, the tension mostly holds, and the ending lands better than expected, even if it may split opinion.
6.5/10: This isn’t a standout thriller, but it’s a decent one-time watch, elevated by strong acting and confident visual direction.
