Penélope Cruz is absolutely radiant in Woman on Top, her charm and sensuality carrying this uneven romantic comedy through its rougher patches. As Isabella, the Brazilian chef with motion sickness and magical cooking powers, Cruz commands every scene with effortless charisma that makes you forgive the film’s flaws.

The premise is refreshingly different… magical realism meets San Francisco cooking show… and director Fina Torres brings visual flair with gorgeous Brazilian locations and sensual food sequences. Harold Perrineau Jr. Shines as Isabella’s transsexual best friend, providing the film’s emotional anchor. The Bossa Nova soundtrack and lush cinematography create genuine romantic atmosphere.

However, Vera Blasi’s script drags in stretches, with uneven pacing that tests patience. The romantic triangle feels obligatory, and some scenes meander without purpose. The network executive subplot is predictable and forgettable.

Still, Cruz’s performance and the film’s unique cultural flavor make it worthwhile. When it works-Isabella cooking, Monica’s wisdom, Toninho’s serenades… it’s genuinely delightful.

A flawed but charming 6/10 that succeeds on star power and distinctive style.
