The Nice Guys is an enjoyable, satirical take on the buddy-cop genre, and I had fun watching it. But it’s not as fresh or bold as it thinks it is.
Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe have decent chemistry, and the 1970s L. A. setting is visually stylish and immersive. The humor is sharp in places, and the absurd, over-the-top moments (like Gosling’s character tumbling down a hill into a corpse) are genuinely funny.
However, it doesn’t reach the heights of stoner comedy classics like Pineapple Express or The Big Lebowski. The film doesn’t fully commit to its genre… it wavers between dark humor, stoner comedy, and earnest emotion, never quite trusting its own tone. The action sequences feel out of place, and the actors seem miscast in roles that don’t play to their strengths.
Gosling is charming but feels more like a goofy sidekick than a leading man, and Crowe’s tough-guy act lacks the nuance or absurdity needed for a true comedy standout.
6.5/10: a solid, entertaining ride… but if you’re a fan of buddy-cop satires, it’s worth a watch, just don’t expect a cult classic.
