Mad Max (1979)

I first saw Mad Max back in the 80s and it blew me away… rewatching it now, I still like it a solid 7.5/10.

This isn’t really a full-on post-apocalyptic story; it’s a raw revenge flick packed with fun, high-octane action. Those car and bike chases hit hard, with stunts that feel insanely real because of the tiny budget around $300k – no fancy effects, just pure grit that makes everything believable.

In the early 80s, the brutal kills and nonstop vehicle mayhem felt cutting edge, way ahead of its time. You have to watch it remembering it’s pure 70s/80s tech, not today’s CGI overload.

Mel Gibson explodes onto the screen here, long before Lethal Weapon or Braveheart turned him huge. And get this – director George Miller was actually a Sydney doctor before jumping into filmmaking with this debut.

It’s a wild ride that still holds up.
