Shrek 2 is one of those rare sequels that understands exactly why the first film worked and does not try to break it. It feels bigger and louder, but never silly or lazy. The characters are still the engine of everything, and that is where it really wins.
Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz slip back into these roles like nothing changed, and the energy between them is just as strong. The big new addition, Puss in Boots, is a total scene-stealer, adding a fresh comic rhythm without stealing focus from the core trio.
The movie is also packed with smart references and playful jabs at fairy-tale culture, including some not-so-subtle Disney jokes that land beautifully if you catch them.
8/10: It is fast, funny, and confident, and while it may not quite top the original, it comes impressively close.
