I went into Dust Bunny hoping for a proper Man on Fire-style guardian thriller with a supernatural twist… gritty hitman protecting a kid, John Wick-level action, all that brooding intensity ramped up by a monster under the bed. Mads Mikkelsen seemed perfect for it, and the premise had real promise.
But blimey, it didn’t quite deliver for me. The whimsical, storybook visuals and quirky fairy-tale vibe take over, leaning more into dark whimsy and oddball charm than hard-hitting revenge or pulse-pounding shootouts. There’s action, mind, and some dazzling sequences, but it feels restrained and dreamlike rather than visceral. The kid-hitman bond is sweet and magnetic, Mads is tender gold, and the giant bunny finale is bonkers fun – yet it left me wanting more raw edge and payoff.
A stylish 5/10 from Bryan Fuller’s debut; imaginative and heartfelt, but not the gritty supernatural guardian saga I envisaged. Disappointing.
I’m heading back to Star Trek Voyager right now… Neelix, B’ellana Torres, Capt Janeway etc. Fuller’s best work ever!
