Kabir Singh (2019)

Kabir Singh had potential… Shahid Kapoor’s raw intensity and a few standout songs (Bekhayali, Tujhe Kitna Chahne Lage) are its only saving graces. But the film drowns in its own excess.

The relentless focus on Kabir’s obsessive rage isn’t just overdone; it’s exhausting. By the 30-minute mark, the point is clear, yet the film beats it into the ground for another hour. Kiara Advani’s Preeti is a poorly written afterthought, her character reduced to a prop in Kabir’s melodrama.

The pacing is sluggish, the editing lazy – this needed a 45-minute trim. The ending feels like a cop-out, offering no real resolution.

Compared to Tere Naam, which balanced similar themes with nuance, Kabir Singh is all noise, no subtlety. Shahid’s performance is strong, but even he can’t salvage the repetitive, bloated mess.

5/10: skip unless you’re a die-hard fan of over-the-top angst.
