Forty-five years later, the definitive blueprint for the superhero genre still carries a weight and warmth that modern blockbusters often struggle to find.

Richard Donner’s direction prioritizes a sense of wonder and genuine positivity, moving away from cynical tropes to give us a hero we can actually look up to. Christopher Reeve delivers the gold standard for dual identities, physically shifting between the bumbling, insecure Clark Kent and the soaring, effortless majesty of Superman with a nuance that remains unmatched.

While the special effects show their age (despite being groundbreaking in the 70s) and Gene Hackman’s Lex Luthor leans into a campier, theatrical villainy (I loved it though), the core of the story is rock solid. The legendary John Williams score elevates every frame, turning a simple story of a man from the stars into a sweeping, timeless epic.

It’s a beautifully earnest film that proves you don’t need grit to have greatness. Even as the novelty of the technical wizardry fades, the heart of this legend stays bright.
