I first caught Jaws back in the late 80s as a kid, and it absolutely floored me – pure terror from something barely on screen until the end. Spielberg’s smart choice to hide the shark built unbearable tension, and that score still hits hard.
Rewatching it now with my early-teen kids, it holds up strong: they jumped at the right moments, laughed at the right ones, and got hooked on the boat showdown. But yeah, after 50 years of thrillers borrowing every trick – jump scares, slow builds, practical effects – it’s tough to hit that original 9/10 awe from back then. Still lands a solid 7.5/10 for me today. It’s not just scary; it’s tight, character-driven, and feels alive.
The kids enjoyed it, which says a lot… Jaws remains a torchbearer that started the summer blockbuster fire, even if newer films have added flash. Classic for good reason.
