Butler Brings Fire to a Slow Burn
IMDb rating: 8/10
A step up from Part One, but not by much. The visuals remain the strongest element – Villeneuve and Fraser create breathtaking desert landscapes and that sandworm sequence is worth the price of admission. They complete Herbert’s novel better than any previous attempt, which counts for something.
But the pacing problems persist. Scenes stretch when they should tighten, momentum stalls when it should build. It’s the same uneven rhythm that dragged down the first film. You feel the runtime.
Austin Butler saves this. His Feyd-Rautha is electric – a complete physical and vocal transformation that commands every scene he’s in. He brings genuine menace and unpredictability. Without him, this would feel even more sluggish.
Solid cinematography and a faithful adaptation earn it credit. Butler’s performance elevates it. But “better than previous attempts” still isn’t great. Another 7.5 from me.
