Conclave

A Decent Thriller with a Weak Final Act

IMDb rating: 6/10

Conclave is a solid but unremarkable political thriller set in the Vatican, anchored by Ralph Fiennes’ strong performance as Cardinal Lawrence.

The film builds intrigue well, exploring the power struggles and moral dilemmas of electing a new Pope, with sharp dialogue and visually stunning cinematography. The ensemble cast, especially Stanley Tucci and Isabella Rossellini, adds depth, and the tension is palpable as alliances shift behind closed doors.

However, the ending feels unrealistic and rushed, undermining the film’s earlier strengths. The final twist, while bold, lacks sufficient build-up and comes across as politically heavy-handed. It’s not a bad movie, but it could have been better with tighter writing and a more believable resolution.

6.5/10: worth a watch for Fiennes’ performance and the atmospheric setting, but don’t expect a masterpiece.
