New Faces, Old Tricks
IMDb rating: 8/10
“Identity Theft” kicks off Season 4 with a bang – literally. The London bombing sets a tense, high-stakes tone, while the River “death” fake-out is classic Slow Horses: darkly funny, brilliantly executed, and packed with misdirection.
The episode reintroduces our core team (Lamb’s deadpan genius, Louisa’s guilt, Roddy’s cluelessness) while seamlessly weaving in new faces (Emma Flyte’s sharp debut, Claude Whelan’s bumbling incompetence).
The mystery hooks hard – who’s behind the bombing? Why was David targeted? – and the French cliffhanger promises deeper intrigue. If there’s a quibble, it’s that the MI5 power dynamics (Whelan vs. Taverner) feel a tad over-familiar, but the action, humour, and Oldman’s Lamb more than compensate.
8/10: A solid, subtly fresh start that proves Slow Horses still has plenty of gas in the tank.
