Syriana

Worth the 20-Year Wait, But Not a Masterpiece

IMDb rating: 7/10

I delayed watching Syriana for twenty years, assuming I’d not appreciate it with my tastes. I was wrong – I liked it more than expected.

The quietly underplayed performances across the board lend a gripping, documentary-like realism; Clooney is nearly unrecognizable beneath the weight and beard. Multiple storylines interweave with purpose, each arc reflecting the tangled machinery of oil, power, and compromise.

Yet it’s not the masterpiece some proclaim. A solid 7.5/10: ambitious, intelligent, but not flawless.

Minor quibbles surface today – the Pakistani workers’ Urdu accents feel just slightly off, and while I can’t judge the Arabic, modern global audiences may notice similar authenticity gaps. In 2005, this passed; today’s production standards demand sharper linguistic precision.

Still, Gaghan’s truly dense, adult thriller rewards patience. It doesn’t simplify geopolitics or offer heroes… just chilling, plausible consequences. If you crave complexity over closure, Syriana delivers. Just temper the hype.
