Chupke Chupke

Pure Hindi, Pure Gold: Warm, Witty & Completely Irresistible

IMDb rating: 9/10

Some films you watch once and remember fondly. Chupke Chupke you watch countless times and it never gets old. There is something about this film that just warms you from the inside – no noise, no excess, just a perfectly crafted soft comedy that wraps around you like a comfortable blanket.

The real secret weapon? Gulzar’s dialogues. The Hindi purity debate between Dharmendra’s Pyare Mohan Ilahabadi and Om Prakash’s pompous Jijaji is some of the wittiest, most linguistically playful writing ever put on a Hindi film screen. Every line lands. Every exchange is a small joy.

And then there is Dharmendra. Here is a man who, in the very same year, was blowing things up and firing guns in Sholay – one of the greatest action films ever made. In Chupke Chupke he is soft, bumbling, mischievous and utterly hilarious. Same goes for Amitabh Bachchan, equally explosive in Sholay and Deewar that year, yet here completely at ease in a gentle comic role. That both men pulled off such completely opposite performances in the same year says everything about their range.

8.5/10: Hrishikesh Mukherjee just knew how to tell a human story without wasting a single frame. A timeless gem.
