Matt Berry Bursts Through the Doors
IMDb rating: 7/10
This is a solid, funny episode with a great plot, but let’s be honest: it’s nothing compared to the all-time best episode we just watched.
The laughs are definitely there, but the undisputed highlight is Matt Berry making his legendary first appearance as Douglas. Knowing where his character goes in later episodes, it is hilarious to see the foundation of “Toast” being laid right here. The contrast between the mundane office chaos and the sheer absurdity of his dramatic, over-the-top entrance is brilliant.
But there’s a lot more working here too. Moss casually feeding Roy’s details into a death calculator and Roy spending the entire episode terrified he’s about to die is brilliant character comedy. The vibrating phone going off in his chest pocket at the exact predicted time of death had me cracking up. Jen relapsing into smoking because of Denholm’s pre-recorded video is a perfect character beat too.
7.5/10: Sharp, funny, and it sets up the Douglas era perfectly.
