Winter: S1.E1

From Silly Opening to Solid Crime Drama

IMDb rating: 7/10

I liked this opener overall. It takes a little time to settle down, though.

The opening climbing scene, where Winter throws away his ropes, is just silly and made me wonder what sort of show I was watching. Thankfully, things improve quickly, and we get a smart, well-constructed procedural that relies on forensic evidence rather than convenient plot twists.

Richard Armitage makes Winter an interesting lead, and I like the mix of his unconventional approach to work and the personal mystery surrounding him. Annabel Scholey is also good as the detective who has to work with him. The central case is engaging, and the final revelation gives the series a bigger mystery worth following.

I haven’t watched the original French series Balthazar, but this episode has made me curious about it.

7/10: This is not a spectacular opener, but it gets the basics right and leaves me interested in seeing where the story goes next.
