Winter: S1.E4

The Case Works, but the Focus Is Slipping

IMDb rating: 7/10

Another good episode, with a strong case that kept me engaged even though I had a fair idea of the culprit halfway through. The mystery is well constructed, and the investigation does a good job of connecting the forensic evidence with the disturbing story behind the victims. Even when the solution becomes easier to anticipate, the case remains compelling.

My main issue is that Winter is spending too much time on its characters’ personal histories and ongoing dramas. Winter’s investigation into Simone’s murder and Bell’s troubled marriage are both important to the larger story, but they are beginning to take up a lot of space. With only six episodes, I would rather see the show give its individual cases more room to breathe instead of constantly shifting attention to the backstories.

Still, the central mystery works well, and the episode maintains a good balance of tension and investigation within the case itself.

7/10.
