Winter: S1.E5

A Good Case Rushed for the Sake of Backstories

IMDb rating: 6/10

This episode had the makings of a good case, but the investigation felt too thin and rushed.

The central mystery raises some interesting questions, and I would have liked to see the team spend more time working through the evidence and reaching the solution. Instead, the case gets wrapped up with surprisingly little effort, leaving much of its potential unexplored.

What frustrates me most is where the episode chooses to spend its time. Winter’s unresolved grief over Simone and Bell’s marital problems are clearly important to the larger story, but they are taking up too much space in a six-episode series. I don’t mind character development, but it shouldn’t come at the expense of the actual crime investigation. Here, the personal dramas get plenty of attention while the case itself feels almost like an afterthought.

Richard Armitage and Annabel Scholey remain watchable, and there are some interesting ideas here. I just wish the writers had focused more on the case instead of rushing through it to make room for the backstories.
