When the Lion King’s “Circle of Life” Gets a Gloriously Grotesque Sewer Remake
I was so excited to get a Mr. Hankey holiday special, and while this is a slightly more subdued Hankey episode that delves deeper into the actual Christmas spirit, it is still a fantastic watch. Expanding the Hankey family lore with an alcoholic wife and three little feces nuggets adds a hilarious, deeply dysfunctional layer to the sewers.
The absolute highlight has to be the “Circle of Poo” musical number… it is a brilliant, frame-by-frame parody of The Lion King that had me rolling. I also absolutely loved how the boys’ cartoon served as a clever, meta-textual homage to the real-life origin of South Park and The Spirit of Christmas short.
Overall, it is a wonderfully creative 8/10 that perfectly blends nostalgic franchise history with excellent musical satire.
