South Park: S5.E14 Butters’ Very Own Episode

Everyone Knows It’s Butters: The Ultimate Rise of a New Main Character

This finale is a supreme example of dark comedy, delivering a brilliant genre shift. 8.5/10.

The transition from a wholesome, bright 1950s sitcom parody – complete with a catchy theme song and upbeat laugh tracks – to pure insanity, domestic trauma, and dark themes like the river drowning scene is incredible. The satire peaks when high-profile figures like O. J. Simpson join the parents to form a support group exclusively dedicated to blaming “that Puerto Rican guy” for their crimes.

Getting a full episode dedicated entirely to Butters is fantastic, and it perfectly sets the stage for him to step up and replace Kenny now that he has actually been killed off properly.

Season 5 as a whole was an exceptional, highly experimental run that brilliantly balanced timely societal commentary, unforgettable character introductions, and a massive shift in the show’s core status quo.
