Winter: Season 1

Strong Cases, Weak Priorities

IMDb rating: 6/10

Winter starts promisingly with smart, well-constructed procedural mysteries that make good use of forensic evidence. The first two episodes were particularly enjoyable, with cases that felt organic and satisfying rather than relying on rushed explanations or convenient twists. Richard Armitage is watchable as the unconventional Ethan Winter, while Annabel Scholey brings a grounded presence to Lauren Bell.

Unfortunately, the series gradually loses focus. The cases remain interesting in principle, but later episodes rush through their investigations and resolutions to make room for the characters’ personal dramas. Winter’s obsession with Simone’s murder becomes repetitive, while Bell’s collapsing marriage takes up far too much screen time. With only six episodes, the show really needed to prioritise its weekly mysteries instead of repeatedly returning to the same backstories.

The finale compounds the frustration by leaving Simone’s murder unresolved after so much buildup. The Pegasus clue provides another hook, but not enough payoff for the time invested.

6.5/10: There is a good procedural here, but it gets buried under its own ongoing drama.
