Apocalypse Needed More Depth, Not More Mutants
I have mixed feelings about this one. It’s the weakest of the second trilogy, but it’s still very good overall. After the strong run of First Class and Days of Future Past, it’s a small step down.
The problem is the villain. Apocalypse could have been a truly great one, yet he never gets the depth he needs, and the Horsemen part isn’t done well either. Too many characters, including Angel, Storm and Psylocke, never feel like more than one-dimensional figures, and Scott could have been done better too.
There’s plenty to enjoy, though. Quicksilver’s entry scene is a standout once again, Jean Grey is set up very well, and the Egyptian designs are solid and absolutely stunning.
Best of all, the final climax action is so good that it makes up for all the misses earlier on.
7.5/10: A flawed but thoroughly entertaining blockbuster.
