Coven Academy is an easy show to like and an easy one to binge. The episodes run anywhere from about 10 to 23 min, so it’s easy to watch a lot in one sitting.
The start is a little rough. The opening episodes are quick and light, and I didn’t feel like I knew most of the characters. I kept waiting for the show to give them more depth. Slowly, it does.
Malina Weissman carries the series. Briar is sharp, stubborn and fun to watch, and she gets better the more we learn about her. I liked her in A Series of Unfortunate Events, and she’s a strong lead here too. The group around her clicks over time, and the magic is creative without being silly.
The middle is solid more than special. A few episodes simply move the story along. But there are real highlights: a school party that gets out of hand, a holiday dinner with a magic twist, and one flashback episode that finally ties loose threads together. The mystery at the center keeps pulling you forward, and the answers feel earned instead of rushed. That patience pays off by the end.
From there, the show picks up speed. The last stretch is tense, fast and well built, and the finale gives a proper ending while leaving a door open.
My only real complaint is that a few side characters never get enough room. Still, I finished wanting more. I’d gladly watch Season 2.
