The Dog Stars

I found this quite underwhelming for a Ridley Scott movie.

The first half looks beautiful, with excellent production values and some impressive cinematography, but it simply drags on and on. Very little happens beyond setting up the characters and the post-apocalyptic world. By the time the story finally gets going in the second half, I had already lost interest.

The plot itself is interesting, and the second half is considerably better, but it feels rushed in comparison. The film could easily have cut the first hour down to 20 minutes and given the main story much more room to breathe.

That imbalance also creates some jarring tonal shifts, particularly with the sudden introduction of the Darlene group, which feels almost like it belongs in a different movie.

The acting is good across the board and the production quality is excellent. But the direction and editing let it down badly.

6/10: For a filmmaker of Scott’s stature, I expected a much tighter and more engaging film.
